Handwash works through surfactant action on the skin surface: lathering activates the surfactant system, which surrounds and lifts surface oils, dirt, and transient microbial contamination, suspending them in the rinse water.

Neutral pH is important because skin has a natural acid mantle at pH 4.5–5.5 — repeated washing with alkaline products disrupts this and causes the dryness that makes hands uncomfortable.
