The chemistry—
Why is 70% the effective concentration for alcohol-based sanitisers, rather than higher-strength alcohol? Alcohol kills microorganisms by denaturing proteins and disrupting lipid membranes. Counter-intuitively, alcohol concentrations above roughly 80–90% are less effective — pure or near-pure alcohol denatures surface proteins so rapidly that it forms a protective coagulated layer around the microorganism, shielding its interior from further penetration.
The presence of water at the 70% concentration slows this surface reaction just enough to allow the alcohol to penetrate the cell fully before protein coagulation seals it off, producing more complete denaturation of internal structures. This is why the 60–80% range consistently outperforms both lower-alcohol and near-pure-alcohol formulations in microbial kill studies.
The gel base slows evaporation relative to a liquid spray, keeping the alcohol in contact with the skin surface for the full duration needed for effective kill, rather than flashing off within a second or two of application.
Application & usage—
Dispense. 2–3 ml (one pump) into the palm.
Apply. Rub thoroughly over all surfaces of both hands, including between fingers and nail beds, until dry — approximately 20–30 seconds.
