Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are cationic surfactants that carry a positive electrical charge.

The cell membranes of common household bacteria carry a negative charge.

The QAC molecule is electrostatically attracted to the bacterial membrane, binds to it, and disrupts the membrane’s structural integrity — causing the cell contents to leak and the bacteria to die.
