The chemistry—
Why does instrument reprocessing rely on enzymes rather than a standard detergent, and why combine three different enzyme types? Surgical soil is a mixture of blood proteins, tissue fats, and occasionally starch-based lubricants or residues, each of which requires a different breakdown mechanism.
Protease enzymes cleave peptide bonds in blood and tissue proteins, breaking large coagulated protein structures into smaller, water-soluble fragments that rinse away rather than baking onto the instrument surface during subsequent heat exposure. Lipase enzymes hydrolyse fat and lipid soil into fatty acids and glycerol, addressing residue that protease alone cannot break down. Amylase targets starch-based residues, completing coverage across the organic soil types typically encountered.
Because enzymatic breakdown of protein soil is essential before autoclave sterilisation — heat-fixed protein residue can shield underlying microorganisms from steam penetration — an effective pre-soak is a genuine safety step in the sterilisation chain, not just a cleaning convenience.
Application & usage—
Pre-soak. Dilute 5–10 ml per litre of lukewarm water (not hot — heat can denature enzymes). Fully immerse instruments for 5–10 minutes.
Ultrasonic bath. Use the same dilution in the ultrasonic tank per equipment manufacturer’s cycle time guidance, then rinse thoroughly before autoclaving.

Caution & storage—
- Handle soiled instruments per your facility’s bio-hazard handling protocol; treat all pre-soak solution as contaminated waste.
- Avoid contact with eyes. May cause mild irritation in individuals sensitised to enzyme proteins.
- In case of eye contact, rinse immediately with clean water.
- Do not use water above 45°C — excess heat deactivates the enzyme system.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Store in original sealed container below 25°C, away from direct sunlight.
- Shelf life 18 months from manufacture date, unopened.
