Stiff laundry does not automatically mean that more fabric softener is needed. The feel can result from residue, hard water, poor rinsing, drying conditions, textile construction or permanent fibre change.
Detergent residue can increase harshness
Excess detergent or incomplete rinsing can leave material on fibres. Residue can make textiles feel less flexible and may become more noticeable after drying.
Minerals can build up
Hard-water minerals can interfere with detergent performance and contribute to deposits. Repeated mineral accumulation can make some textiles feel harsher or less flexible.
Overloading can reduce rinsing
A packed washer gives textiles less room to move and rinse. Poor circulation can leave detergent, soil or minerals behind even when the cycle finishes normally.
Drying changes textile hand
Air drying, tumble drying and high heat can produce different surface feel depending on the fibre and construction. A textile can therefore feel stiffer after one drying method even when it is clean.
Wear and fibre damage can be permanent
Abrasion, heat, chemical incompatibility and repeated processing can alter the fibre or finish. A permanent change cannot be corrected simply by adding more finishing product.
Softener is not always the first fix
Before adding a softening step, check detergent dose, rinsing, water conditions, load size and the care label. Some performance textiles should not receive the same finishing treatment as ordinary garments.
Troubleshooting sequence
Compare the stiff load with a known-good load, then review dosing, water hardness, rinse quality, drying method and textile compatibility one factor at a time.
